Rattlezasia @ Formula Drift Malaysia 2009 - Road to FD Malaysia

FDM 2009 was dated on 19th and 20th Dec. However, our story begin a bit earlier than that. Our ace drifter, Zulfikar, and his AE86 with some crews arrived in KL on the 17th Dec early in the morning. It is final day to get the car ready before D-day. Late in the same evening, Zul send his car for tuning and few hours later, everything was perfectly done. However, on that night, we received a call from Zul saying that he was encounter a medium-major terbulance during his journey back to Klang. A screw underneath chasis to hold the dog bone to his ae86 exle was missing (err.. i dont know what to call that thing...huhu). Luckily Amat's Ke70 has the same undercariage as fit as AE86. A 1 ton jack and a few bricks the only tools to lift Zul's AE86. To fix the screw underneath his car without proper tools is one matter. Fixing the car at the motorcycle lane is another story. It was on a hiway actually. Scare like hell, scare if any motorist rush to us, specifically, his crew who help us to fix in the screw.

Then the next day (18th Dec) there is no pratice session. So we take this opportunity to attached main sponsor stickers all over Zul's AE86. The main sponsor for him was MyEG (Malaysia E-Government Service). We all get busy do that and get other thing to be ready.

Saturday (19th Dec) is the practice session. It start in the morning. It was hot without sun and wind and track condition was dry. Without warning, the sky heavily drop its tears during qualify session. Luckily no major accident occur. At the end of the day, Zul managed to finish 33rd overall right behind Zee. Just another step to reach Best 32 finalist. Maybe next year, we will send more drifters from Rattlezasia to compete in Formula Drift since we do have cars that properly setup but lack of experience. Kudos and Thanx to Zul for bring Rattlezasia to next level in drift scene.

Tengku Djan from Team Bridgestone Malaysia manoeuvred his Nissan 180SX to top position, reigning supreme over an accomplished field of 53 hot-shot professional drift drivers at the final day of the inaugural Goodyear Formula DRIFT Malaysia held at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) on Sunday. Djan just edged out his worthy opponent Sak Nana Kiki from Team PTT Thailand in the final tandem battle, while Team Goodyear Malaysia’s ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddet, who wowed the crowd in his Mazda RX-7, came in third. Thousands of spectators poured into MAEPS from as early as 8:30 am, and were thrilled at the hot tyre-burning action as top drivers from eight countries including Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Thailand and Japan put on a fast and furious show that rivaled the very best in the world. The two-day event saw keen competition amongst 53 drivers from across the Asia-Pacific region. All 53 drivers pushed their rear-wheel-drive cars to the limits by demonstrating impeccable precision and vehicle control to enter the ranks of the Top 32. They then faced off in one-on-one tandem battles to whittle down the driver pool to the Sweet 16, Elite 8, Final 4 and finally, the Big 2. Djan took on Sak Nana Kiki in a spectacular final tandem battle royale and with wheels screeching and tyres burning, crowd favourite The 'Prince of Drift' gained a dominant lead in what was truly a scintillating finale to two great days of high-octane action and furious competition. Title sponsor Goodyear Malaysia showcased a stellar line-up of 17 drivers, including top female drifter, Azrina Jane Abdullah, fellow team mates Ariff Johanis, Michael Gan and Johan Norman, as well as some of the top regional drifters, Japan’s Ryuji Miki and New Zealander “Mad” Mike Whiddet, both from Team Goodyear Malaysia. “Goodyear’s very first Formula DRIFT Malaysia was sizzling with red-hot action. It is certainly an honor to be part of this exhilarating event. Having such a number of international and local drivers competing only underscores our commitment to raise drifting standards to an international level,” said Richard Fleming, Managing Director, Goodyear ASEAN. “There is also a high degree of synergy between drifting, a motorsport that places strong emphasis on advanced technology and precision driving and performance tires. Our ultra high performance tires put up a fantastic showing the last two days,” he added. The Goodyear Formula DRIFT Malaysia was the climax of the three-part Formula DRIFT Series, which blasted off with the Formula DRIFT Singapore ProAm Series 2009 in July and Formula DRIFT Thailand in November. As the official event organizer and broadcaster for the Goodyear Formula DRIFT Malaysia 2009, ESPN Starsports (ESS) will produce and broadcast the event highlight program on ESS’ footprint of 310 million viewers in 24 countries, check your local cable listings.

However, in December, there were no update from us due to lack of time and some technical problems. We will ensure you that this matter wont happened again in the future. FANS of the sport of drifting in Batu Pahat were recently treated to a spectacular display of skills and techniques at the Batu Pahat Mall Drift Challenge 2009.The two-day competition, now in its fifth year, had about 50 competitors from Johor, Malacca, Negri Sembilan and Singapore. The event was organised by the Batu Pahat Mall and Team YH Autosport, a prominent drift team in the district, at the complex's parking lot.

The star of the event was Malaysian professional drifter, Lim Kim Wan, more popularly known as D-Wan, who acted as judge.Kek Beng Hui, the organising committee chairman, said: "D-Wan is one of the best drifters in Malaysia. He is competing in the drifting circuit in China." Kek is a founding member of Team YH Autosport. D-Wan lived up to Kek's praise with his demonstration of his drifting skills. Some lucky visitors also got to ride with him in his car. The event was officiated by Parit Yaani assemblyman, Ng See Tiong,

The sport of drifting was first introduced in Japan about 30 years ago. It started out as a racing technique used in the All Japan Touring Car Championship races.The sport continued to develop and became more popular with motorsport fans in the '80s and '90s. Unlike other types of motorsports, in drifting, the emphasis is on skills and techniques rather than speed. With fans all over the world, drifting now has its own series in places like Japan, the United States and Europe.

In Batu Pahat, there is widespread interest in the sport but enthusiasts are hampered by the lack of space for them to gather and hone their skills. "Whenever we want to practise, we have to go to Malacca or Johor Baru as there isn't a place in Batu Pahat for us to do so. "But Ng has said that he will try to get a place for drift fans to practise in Tongkang Pechah, so hopefully we will soon be able to practise here," said Kek, who was initiated into the sport about four years ago. He said most drifters in the district are self-taught and would exchange tips and advice whenever they gathered. "Once in while, we would have professional drifters like D-Wan present at these gatherings, and they would act as instructors for us to further improve our skills," said Kek.

The sport is also an expensive one. One must be willing to part with at least RM30,000 just to start off.
"For someone to enter the world of drifting, they need a rear-wheel drive car which, depending on the make, will then have to be modified for a more powerful engine and safety purposes. "They would also have to spend a lot on tyres. The sport is hard on the tyres, which usually have to be changed after every race," said Kek. Team YH Autosports, which was established about four years ago with two cars, now has 10 cars under its stewardship.

COMING SOON: HACHI-ROKU 2010 DEBUT

2010 is a magical year since all drift machines own by Rattlezasia drifters will be completed in terms of upgrading. One of them is this beasty hachi-roku owned by Zul. This Falken sponsered hachi-roku currently undergone some major modification in Ipoh. We will update the latest informations about the hachi-roku after Zul make debut in year 2010. Be patient fellas since me also anxoius to see what this beast looks like on the track.huhu. But for now, below are some random picture of Zul's hachi-roku BEFORE undergone those major surgeries. Batu Pahat Mall Drift Challange Oct 2009

9.15am on sunday 18th Oct morning, 'R' media crew (amat, xpitt and wan) began their journey to down south to Batu Pahat for drift competition at BP mall to cover up our team members who is participating on that event. It is a long journey till the driver said his leg became more heavier as time goes by to put the pedal to the metal (lol). We arrived around 12.30pm in the middle of striking sun of sunday. By that time, group practices were held. The crowd is gaining in numbers as the sun have no mercy shooting its 1/70 heat of the hell.

Although everybody were burned and uneased with the condition, 2 photographers on the ground, 9 team crews and all drivers were highly committed at that moment. Our team drifters that represent Rattlezasia were:

• Firdaus (chop) - KE70 R.
  
• Rashid - Clean freak drift machine.
  
• Ah Wee - Highly potential and shining drifter.
  
• Zulfikar - Formally known as 'Zul Hachirouku' aka 'Zul Falken'.

All our drifters were participated in expert category.

Zul qulified with 95 marks.

Rashid with 65 qualifying marks.

Firdaus (chop) qualified with 96 marks.

Ah Wee with 60 qualifying marks. But unfortunately, he got some trouble with the machine. Something related to his intercooler piping.

After all points calculated and sorted, only Zul and Chop managed to make way to Best 16. As usual, the format would be tsuiso battle. So here are the battle between Zul vs Ah Soon. It was a tight battle since both using same platform (KE70) and same engine (SR20DET). At the end of the battle, Zul make himself through to Best 8.

In the best 16 battle between chop and Vicky 'da crazy datsun', there was 4 times repeating the battle since judges couldn't make dicision since it was a very tight and breath taking battle. At the end of the battle, the satisfaction was chop's which make him through to the Best 8.

During the best 8 battle, it was Zul vs Sharul (A31). Unfortunately, Zul was left out and couldn't make way to Best 4 but still it was a good battle and the crowd enjoyed it.

In another Best 8 battle, it was chop vs silvia RPS13.... isk forgot edi the competitor name...somebody remind me!!! andy maybe??? This was the most thrilling tsuiso battle of the day since it was neck to neck battle. It was so close like "i-can-kiss-your-door-with-my-fender". Pictures below are the proof. However, Chop also did not managed qualify for Best 4 but still crowd was gone wild with the action produced by both of them. This is what we called entertainment.

45 cars were participated in this competition. In the expert and novice categories, prizes were given untill 8th and 3rd positions respectively. We manage to complete this event untill podium finish. Congratulation to our drifters. Thank you and kudos to Rashid and Ah Wee for your best affort and your showmanship :D. There always next year guys. Cheers! So the podium grabber's from Rattlezasia were:

• Firdaus (chop) - 5th place in expert category.
• Zulfikar - 6th place in expert category.
